Plume‐Slab Interactions Can Shut Off Subduction

چکیده

Abstract Mantle plumes are typically considered secondary features of mantle convection, yet their surface effects over Earth's evolution may have been significant. We use 2‐D convection models to show that can in fact cause the termination a subduction zone. This extreme case plume‐slab interaction is found when slab readily weakened, for example, by damage‐type rheology, and subducting young. posit this mechanism be relevant, particularly early Earth, subdued version these interactions remain relevant modern zones. Such core‐mantle boundary–surface behind some complexity tomographically imaged structures, South America. More generally, plume “talk back” zones make plate tectonics more episodic.

Friend or Foe? Can We Selectively Shut Off Immune Responses?

In lieu of an abstract, below is the first paragraph of the paper. The immune system of the human body serves as both an enemy and an ally. It is an ally when it constantly fights off attacks from several types of microbes. However, it is an enemy when it attacks a life-saving heart transplant or mistakenly eats away the tissues of the body (Marx, 1990). It is the job of the immune system to ke...

Evolution of the shut-off steps of vertebrate phototransduction

Different isoforms of the genes involved in phototransduction are expressed in vertebrate rod and cone photoreceptors, providing a unique example of parallel evolution via gene duplication. In this study, we determine the molecular phylogeny of the proteins underlying the shut-off steps of phototransduction in the agnathan and jawed vertebrate lineages. For the G-protein receptor kinases (GRKs)...

Bacteriophage T4-induced shut-off of host-specific translation.

To study the mechanism by which bacteriophage T4 inhibits the synthesis of inducible host enzymes we measured the formation of beta-galactosidase from preformed lac mRNA. Beta-Galactosidase was induced with isopropyl-beta-D-thiogalactopyranoside in the presence of 7-azatryptophan, a tryptophan analogue that is incorporated into proteins and renders the beta-galactosidase formed inactive. The ac...

Performance of Sulfonated Polyacrylamide/Chromium Triacetate Hydrogels for Water Shut-off Treatment

A hydrogel was prepared by crosslinking aqueous solutions of sulfonated polyacrylamide/chromium triacetate for use in water shut off operations. Gel swelling and the effects of salinity, injection time and flow rate on residual resistance factor (Frr) were investigated. In the presence of electrolytes, gel swelling decreased by about 80%. Results showed that oil permeability increased as inject...

Understanding Macroeconomic Interdependence: Do We Really Need to Shut Off the Current Account?

This paper develops a small open economy, sticky-price model with a role for current account dynamics in the transmission of shocks. I solve the stationarity problem of incomplete markets, open economy models by adopting an overlapping-generations structure. I model nominal rigidity by assuming that firms face costs of output price inflation volatility. Markup dynamics affect labor demand and i...
